Satellite Maps
Google Earth
No website on maps can even dream of leaving out the ever so popular Google Earth. This tool is addictive. When it first launched, I was amazed, and disappointed because back then, I couldn't see where I lived, down here in the tropics - Barbados. I kept getting that ugly grey tile on the screen - insufficient data.
Now, since they recently updated their photos, I was able to pinpoint my home last Sunday! I actually saw the roof of it! If you haven't downloaded Google Earth, you're missing out...get it here.
Or you can go straight to their maps page.
National Geographic Map Machine
The Map Machine at National Geographic works in a similar way to Google Earth, in terms of the interactivity. With Map Machine, I was able to select theme maps and view the average temperature of the Caribbean countries. I could also see where hurricances hit in the past. You can select different themes - trip planning, weather, diasters, farming, population density, nature and conservation....A very useful tool. Check it out here.
Weather Maps
At Weather.com, you'll see almost real time satellite views of the Caribbean region, with cloud cover. There are instructions on how to read the maps, see it in motion severe weather outlook forecasts. Viewing the map is free, there is the option to track storms on an ad-free page if you want, for a monthly fee. Check it out here.
The AccuWeather.com hurricane weather site also has a satellite photo and lots of other information on hurricanes, news, storm preparation and so on. View it here.
